Allye McLaughlin- Collection 2

herbaceous stem- plant stems that have been modified to serve the same function as leaves. Many flowering plants, such as this one above, have herbacious stems.

Pollen- a fine to coarse powder containing the microgametophytes of seed plants, which produce the male gametes (sperm cells). it's hard to see but this flower has a small amount of pollen close to the center.

deuterostomes- organisms, such as ourselves, that are bilaterally symmetrical. Although i dont have a picture of a full human body, the handrepresents one of two. And just like we have two hands we have two feet, two legs, two arms, etc.

Angiosperm- The seeds inside the apple tell you that it is part of the class angiosperms. The angiosperm is a flowering plant. The Apple tree flowers and produces apples.

Carbohydrates-fibrous: complex carbohydrates that come mostly from green vegetables. They are rich in fiber and help the digestive process run smoothly. Green peppers are only one example of fibrous carbohydrates.
Lepidoptera- a large order of insects that includes moths and butterflies (called Lepidopterans). This is a picture of a moth (I'm not sure what kind) that I found on the side of my house. Lepidoptera means " Scale wings".

Ethylene- Bananas contain ethylene which is a colorless gas but is used to enhance the color of fruits (most of the time citrus fruits). So when a banana begins to go bad it is actually giving off this gas and thats when it loses its bright yellow color.

Fermentation- This jar of pickles represents fermentation because in order to become pickles, the cucumber has to be soaked in a type of juice until it has completely changed.

Heartwood- The hard central wood of the trunk of an exogenous tree. Looking at the picture, it is the lighter part of the wood in the center. It is the older, nonliving part of the tree.

Thorn of a plant- a thorn is defined as a sharp-pointed aborted branch. This picture is of a rose bush with many branches covered in thorns. the thorns of a plant are to protect the plant from being eaten by animals and other organisms.
