Biology Collection 2: Hillary Lovenduski :)

Biolgy Collection #2
Due August 13, 2010
My object is the Giraffe again :)

*A conifer leaf is the leaf of a cone bearing, gymno- spermous tree or shrub that are mostly needle or scale shaped. These trees do not lose their leaves seasonally as deciduous ones do.
Being conifers, Pine trees (such as this one pictured to the left) have pointed, needle-like conifer leaves.

*A deciduous leaf is the leaf of a deciduous plant, which shed their leaves annually during the Autumn (or Fall) and grow them back during the Spring season.

Sugar Maple trees, such as this one to the right, are examples of deciduous plants with these types of leaves, for they shed and regrow their leaves seasonally.

*A fruit- dry with seed is a the fruit produced by a plant in order to reproduce, where the fruit's ovary wall becomes very hard when it matures, leaving the seed fused with the ovary wall.

These macadamian nuts and peanuts photographed here to the left are examples of fruit dry with seed.

*A fruit- fleshy with seed is a fleshy, smoothe-skinned frut with a ovary wall that remains fleshy through matruity. These types of fruits result from the ripening of an ovary of a flower with only one pistil.

This cherry tomato, shown above, with its fleshy inside, and smoothe skin, is an example of a fruit fleshy with seed.

*A Herbacious stem is a plant structure that have been modified to serve the same function of leaves, having leaf like texture, color, and little woody tissue.
Many flowering plants, such as this one pictured to the left, are examples of plants with herbacious stems.

*A Pollinator is an insect (or another organism) that carries pollen from one plant to another, thus pollinating flowers and helping them to reproduce.

This bee (photographed to the right) is taking pollen from this flower and spreading it to other flowers, thus pollinating it and making this bee a pollinator.

*The Stigma is the sticky part of a flower's carpel which traps pollen grains.

*The Style is the stalk of the carpel, with the ovary at the base and the stigma at the top.

The stigma, located at the top of the flower, holds a majority of the flower's pollen. while the stlye, or stalk, connects the ovary to the stigma.

*A thorn of a plant is a sharp, pointed, woody extension of a stem or leaf, held by many plants with woody stems.
A rose, as a woody-stemmed plant, uses thorns to protect itself from predators/herbivores.

*A woody stem is the stem of a plant that is not considered herbacious and, that after about 2 years, thickens in order to help the plant grow and circulate.

A tree, with its strong woody trunk, is an example of a plant with a woody stem. Although trees have heartwood, sapwood, and cork, that others don't have.
(if you look closely, you'll see me holding my giraffe :) haha)

*A xylem is the vascular plant tissue consisting mainly of tubular dead cells that conduct most of the water and minerals upward from the roots to the rest of the plant.
The outer layer of a tree, or bark, (as shown to the right), is am example of a xylem. The bark of the tree holds all of the minerals and dead cells of the tree.
