Biology Collection 2: Jessica Hardeman

1 and 2. This is an example of chitin and mycelium. This picture was taken in Cold Lake, AB Canada over the summer. It is an example of chitin because it is a sugar monomer that is found in many fungal walls and it is an example of mycelium because it is found in fungus.

3. This picture represents a deciduous leaf. I took this picture in my backyard.

4. This picture represents an insect. This picture is of a butterfly that I took at the Calgary Zoo in Calgary, Canada

5,6,7. This picture represents a meristem, stem-herbaceous, and anglosperm. I took this at the Calgary Zoo in Canada. It represents a meristem because it is a plant tissue that allows for growth. It represents an anglosperm because it is a flowering plant.

8 and 9. This picture represents a modified stem of a plant and a flower ovary. This picture was taken in Cold Lake, AB, Canada. The ovary would be located in the carpel of the flower, or Specifically, it is the part of the pistil (which is located at the point of connection with the base of the petals and sepals). This also shows a modified stem because it is located above ground.

10. This picture represents byrophte because it is moss. This picture was taken in my backyard.

  1. Jess,

For 8 and 9, can you explain how the stem is modified and where the ovary would be found on the plant? Also, what part of 10 is the moss? I see shelf fungi on the tree, but no moss.

    Thanks,
    Wright

  2. Jess,

Most stems are above ground. That wouldn't be a modified version. I still don't see the moss on 10.
