Carrots are an example of a long day plant. This means that it requires more then six hours of sunlight for it to flower. Plants can fall into two groups, long day plants and short day plants. Plants who fall under the shortday plants category will only flower if they are exposed to an amount of sunlight that is shorter then a specific length.
