Pictures - Liz Ford

Anthropod - This is a picture of a grasshopper found in Florida. These organisms have an exoskeleton and are part of the Phylum Arthropoda. Anthropods have segmented bodies and jointed appendages. Mostly all anthropods give birth to eggs, except scorpions whom give birth to live young.

Long-day plant - These roses are long-day plants, found in my grandmother's garden in Florida. They require more than six hours of sunlight, usually around 9-10 hours of sunlight per day. This specific plant of roses has both red and pink roses, which mean they cross-bred.

Fruit - Fleshy with seed - Grapefruit trees are very common in Florida, and this picture is taken from the bottom of my grandparents driveway looking up. Fleshy fruits with seeds can be subdivided again into those from a single flower or group flower. The grapefruit is a Hesperidium and is formed from a single flower.

Herbaceous stem - This plant stems have been modified to and can serve the same processes that leaves do. The stem looks and functions like a leaf, but is indeed a stem. These stems are most commonly seen in Cactaceae which are flat but also have sharp spines up and down the stem.

Thorn of Plant - Roses are the most commonly known plant with thorns. The thorns are modified stems of plants that have sharp thorns on the stem. These have been found to help protect the plants from herbivores and predators.

Woody stems - This water oak tree trunk is a great example of a woody stem. Woody stemp are stems that have been growing for more thank two years. After the two first years of growing, the stems circulation increases with the growing of the plant.

Flower Ovary - The flower ovary indetifies a female plant from a male plant. The ovary is part of the pistil in the plant. On the stigma and style, right above the ovary, the pollen lands and germinates.

Niche - This shows the relational position between the organism and its ecosystem. The niche can include predators, prey, and anything that is a threat or benefit in the organism's ecosystem. these red ants niche is their ant hill, along with the pavement surround it.

Heartwood - In this live oak tree, the heartwood is a great area in the tree. The heartwood is the central part of the wood. Heartwood is less resistant to the decaying because of Tylosis, a chemical reaction. These live oak has a diameter of around 54 cm, making the heartwood a large proportion of the tree.

Pine cone (Female) - This pine cone is a female that had fallen off the tree recently. The female pine cones consist of a ovules that can be pollinated and then produce seeds. Females pine cone structures vary.
