The stems on this tree are examples of woody stems. Woody stems are presistant main stalks typically rising above the ground and is the support for the plant and may grow leaves or flowers.

This picture of a rose bush is an example of a plant with a thorn. A thorn is a modified branch in the form of a sharp woody spine. The thorns help protect the plant and can actually do some damage.
